Because whichever side wins the BA: UR war calls the shots - and that will determine the directions of the project and its product. OK, so it’s a tricky issue but is it important? Well, yes, it is. So what’s the difference? And should one take precedence over the other where time and resources are limited? That one really fans the flames! It’s a question that tends to come up early on in a project. Both talk about understanding users’ needs, and ways of working. Both use the same term ‘Discovery’ to describe initial inquiries, for instance. I experience the same sinking feeling when asked about that ‘old potato’ - the difference between user research and a business analyst’s (BA) research. When asked what I do for a living, I hesitate because I know there will only ever be one response: ‘What’s that’? or …well…no answer at all, more of an abrupt change of topic. User research is a funny old kind of a thing to do.
